What Temperature Does a Beer Freeze?

Have you ever damaged a beer when frozen in a freezer? Do you wonder what the freezing point of a beer is? Or do you wish to avoid bursting or cracking a beer bottle next time? I totally understand your concern because you’re not alone.

Here, we’ll take a look at what temperature does a beer freeze to help you avoid unwanted situations. Additionally, we will take you through some factors that may lower or raise the beer freezing point to avoid your beer from becoming a slush.

What Temperature Does a Beer Freeze?1

What Is The Standard Freezing Point Of A Brew?

Most beers freeze at 28 degrees Fahrenheit or -2.2 degrees Celsius.

I bet that you would have to wait for a whole day to reach this freezing point. But that does not necessarily mean that you make the fridge a beer storage facility. You can forget and find stony ice bottles waiting for your service.

However, this standard freezing point is not relative to all beers.  Some beers will exhibit a higher freezing point and others a lowers one. That depends on the alcohol content in some beers that shows different freezing point.

To keep your beer in quality and preserve its nourishing taste, you need to lower the freezing point. Even in large-scale manufacturing of brew, there are substances used to keep the beer in check.

Why Some Brews Last Longer In A Fridge?

You would love a beer that stays cool in a fridge without condensing. Even in large-scale beers, the brew needs to remain in liquid form at a lower preserved temperature. That is only possible if the content has a less freezing point.

What Aspects Make A Beer To Have A Less Freezing Point?

1. Alcohol

Alcohol is a significant factor that influences the icing rate of a beer. Remember that alcohol has an ethanol element that freezes at -173 degrees. That means a higher proportion of alcohol in a beverage makes it not to freeze faster.

However, the only bad news is water.  Water condenses at 32 degrees. Hence it will freeze to icy crystals faster. Since water is the dominant component in beer, you will find flakes of ice inside your bottle. You require a harmer or a heat source to crash or thaw the ice.

2. The size and material of a container

Typically, the size of a vessel matters a lot in controlling the temperature of a liquid. Compare a keg container and a beer bottle. Which do you think keep the alcohol cooled? A kegerator is the answer because it has more liquid that harnesses plenty of energy to freeze.

That could be the reason the kegs are labeled at -4 degrees Celsius. In other words, it maintains the freezing point of the content, which does not solidify. Still, the kegerators are made of sturdy materials that keep the brew cool.

3. Sugar content

Sugar is a form of preservative. With it, you’ll not find the icy fragments that inconvenience a beer taste. What sugar does is to keep water from condensing. It therefore lowers the freezing point as the alcohol.

At What Temperature Should You Serve Some Drinks?

An optimum temperature is right to serve customers, especially for a bartender. In this article, we will highlight some of the cool temperatures to store your beer brands.  Any temperature below that would make the beer freeze.

1. German pilsners, wheat brews, and full-bodied lagers

If you ever tasted these beers, you realize their smoothness and soft nature. They are the craft beers that prioritize taste as their trademark. A temperature of forty to forty-five degrees Fahrenheit is right with these beers.

2. Pale Ales, Porter And Stouts

These types of beers are tasty and preferred when warmer. Stouts like Guinness and other products are served at this temperature. Their optimum serving temperature is around fifty degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Light-Bodied Lagers And Low Alcohol Beers

Typically, you have had a taste of one of them. These alcoholic beverages are the most common beers. You ought to drink them at about thirty-five degrees Fahrenheit, and anything like 25 degrees would make the beer froze.

What Would Happen If The Beer Freeze?

Imagine having a party, and your beer is all frozen. Perhaps somebody left the beer overnight (it might be you), and the product turns icy. What follows is the explosion of the beer glass, glass bottles cracking, or cans’ shrinking?

The product loses its quality because the carbonation of the liquid escapes. Also, the beer’s water condenses, leaving the pint tasteless. Once the carbon escapes the bottles, it forces the can of the beer bottle to budge or break.

Also, the difference in atmospheric pressure, due to the heat transfer cracks the bottle. But all is not lost; you can still recover your product. What you need is to be there at the exact time the brew freezes.

How Can You Recover A Frozen Beer?

1. Decantation

Remember the science lesson on decantation? You can still salvage your beer using this method. By decantation, you separate the liquid alcohol from frosts. Thereby you are left with a concentrated drink.

The exercise is simple but needs you to be there on time before all the alcohol content condenses. Once all the staff is frozen, you can still thaw the content.

2. Thawing

It is also a simple exercise because you require to melt the ice. First, extract the frozen bottles and open their cork. Run the bottles under cool water slowly until all frozen material combines with water.

Then place the bottle in the microwave on less heat. With time, the ice will start melting. However, submerging or sprinkling the content with warm water is not a solution. That is because you will create a rapid difference in atmospheric pressure that makes bottle to crack.

3. Make A Margarita

Ever tasted a beer margarita? This drink is excellent, especially on a hot summer day. Use a margarita lime distillate, submerge the ice flakes in it and enjoy the drink.

4. Cook With The Beer Ice Cubes

Did you know that you can prepare other meals with beer? Even with its bitter taste, it matches well with some types of foods.  Therefore prepare the foods with the frozen beer, and the flavor will be impeccable. You can always learn how to prepare alcohol with other meals.

Conclusion
